Overall, this book has a promising plot line. It pulled me in and I wanted to find out what's happening. So for the story itself, I'd give 4 or 5 stars. But sadly, all characters were under-developed, and Fen, the main female character, was almost annoying. There was too much jumping back and forth between times and point of views, and everything to do with the dress itself was too weird, and for those reasons I'd give it 2 stars. If I could, I'd give it 3.5 stars.
Like The Phantom Tree and House of Shadows, The Woman in the Lake is a pitch perfect romance, has a propulsive plot and serves up a delicious mix of old house, history and tangled characters playing out an old compulsion. Well worth it!
This story and all the characters was so good. Fast reading. I couldn't put it down. This was one of the few times I enjoyed the contemporary part of the storyline more than the historical.
First, the description for this book touts it for fans of Kate Morton. I respectfully disagree. While it has some elements similar to Morton's novels - alternating timelines, a mystery in the past, and complex characters, The Woman in the Lake can't compare to Morton's novels. The comparison to Susannah Kearsley is a bit more on the nose, as there are supernatural elements woven into the narrative which are never explained to my satisfaction."Her fingers brushed against something soft and smooth, silk, aged and pale yet still retaining the shimmer of gold."A sensation shot through her, recognition and dread and a strange sort of excitement."The golden gown came free of its wrappings with a whisper of sound that was like the past stirring. It felt as though it sighed, shivering in Fen's hands. Unconsciously, she held it close to her heart in exactly the same way she had done in her bedroom fourteen years before...."This is yours. Do with it what you think best but be aware of the danger.'"The novel is written from three different points of view, all connected by the golden gown's affect on them: Fenella in the modern day, Lady Isabella and her lady's maid, Cordelia, in the 1700s. In both storylines, the female characters are in jeopardy from a lover or ex-lover and must go from a place of helplessness to one of strength. Ultimately, this is what I liked about The Woman in the Lake - its theme of female empowerment. The last chapters moved fast towards a triumphant conclusion for both storylines. But my interest was piqued by the Author's Note which revealed that Lady Isabella was based on a real-life aristocrat, Lady Diana Spencer (not that one, but an ancestor of hers). I would wait to research the author's inspiration as doing so might spoil some narrative turns.
I have mentioned in past posts that I am a fan of historical fiction. I don’t read it often because I am afraid of getting burnt out. I am also a mystery/thriller fan. I like reading a mystery/thriller and trying to guess what is going on. So, when there are those two genres thrown together, I will pick it up. That’s what happened with The Woman in the Lake. I saw it, read the blurb and got it.The Woman in the Lake was a bit different than some of the other mystery/thriller books that I have read in the past. Those differences actually made me like the book more. The first difference is that the book went back and forth between 1st person and 3rd person. I usually dislike it when a book does that. The storyline gets lost between the constant back and forth. Not in this book. The author makes it clear when the POV changes. It made that part of reading the book pleasurable for me.The second difference is that there are 3 separate storylines. Again, something that would drive me nuts. Like the POV changes, the author handled the 3 storylines wonderfully. Lady Gerard and Constance’s storyline was intertwined. The author was able to keep them separate until the pivotal scene towards the end of the book. It was wonderfully written.I loved the characters. There were layers to them. I loved that when one layer was peeled back, another was revealed. This kept up until the end.The historical fiction angle of the book was wonderfully written as well. It was set in Gregorian England. The author did a fantastic job of describing everyday life in that era. She also did a fantastic job of portraying how women were treated. Lady Gerard was beaten by Lord Gerard. Everyone turned a blind eye to it. Constance was sold to Lord Gerard and forced to be Lady Gerard’s maid. She was treated like she was invisible. Which was all part of being part of a servant and catering to the nobility. The mystery/thriller angle had me guessing also. The author did a fantastic job of keeping me on my toes with Fenella’s storyline. Was she going insane? Was she suffering a psychotic breakdown? How come she kept seeing Jake? What was she going to find out about the gown? I couldn’t get enough. The ending was fantastic. The author did a great job at bringing all 3 storylines together, merging them and ending the book. I was surprised at the twist that the author threw in at the end of the book. I didn’t see that coming!
Mom really enjoyed this book. This is the first Nicola Cornick novel she has read. I usually get her romance novel however this one was more of a romance, mystery and drama rolled up in one. She loves to read and this book was no exception. I know when she loves a book because she will read it in a day or two. This book was read in a day and half. In addition, I am on the hunt for more Nicola Cornick novels. The book was well written and mom enjoyed the easy flow thru the story.I never tell about the book itself as I DO NOT want to spoil anything for another reader. Mom may give me a synopsis about the book but I never talk about the story line. Hate it when someone tells me something about the story that occurs 3/4 the way thru a book or a reviewer tells me they do finally get married. I don’t want you spoiling my reading and I do not want to spoil your reading when it comes to a good book. I figure it you are wanting to know a little about the story, you can read the synopsis that Amazon and the author gives you. This is definitely going to recommend this novel to the other ladies in her Beauty Shop Book Group. She enjoyed this book and it will not the last Nicola Cornick novel.
