I never write book reviews, yet I felt so compelled to write this one because this book resonated with me. I had wet my phone the other day so I was without a phone for a few days. During those days, I decided to bring my kindle along instead. I read this book every day on my commute to work instead of browsing the internet like always.Claudia speaks from her experiences, so she knows what she's talking about. Many business authors only talk about theories without even testing them themselves. Claudia is an idea machine. And I hope I can be one too.As soon as I finished the book, I immediately took out a pencil and started coming up with ideas. In fact, here are ten reasons why you should get this book:1. It will bring you out of your comfort zone by forcing you to come up with ideas (very hard to do)2. It will help you with your creativity3. You'll be a lot sharper because you've been training your idea muscle4. You'll go on many adventures because you'll want to execute on those ideas5. You'll meet new people because you'll learn how give out ideas for free6. You'll learn how to handle rejection because you'll suck at coming up with ideas at first7. You'll learn to be generous because you won't care if people steal your ideas8. You'll make more money because some of your ideas will take root and grow9. You'll have someone (Claudia) guide you to writing ten ideas a day. Sometimes we need a little push.10. Once you become an idea machine, you'll stop making excuses. So what are you waiting for?It takes six months to become an idea machine. Seth Godin says "As you've probably guessed, the best time to start was last year. The second best time, is right now."If not now, then when?
I very much enjoyed the idea behind this book and I really liked working on the exercises which dominate it. The basic idea is to really work the "idea muscle" by doing daily tasks which are easy to conceive yet could be a little challenging to accomplish. The ultimate goal is not only to generate ideas but also to get into the habit of working every day. A noble goal for anyone who wants to generate content for a living. The biggest issue I had were many of the exercises were clearly designed around the life of the author which worked much of the time but often felt very much like she was really stretching to find ideas to work with to thicken up the book. Exercises like "pick one historical figure and create ten questions you would ask them" are great but "ten new yoga poses created using animal names, and describe alignment, purpose and effects" are completely useless (and a little snobby) to someone like me who doesn't know the first thing about yoga.Occasionally, you run into a string of dud exercises which you don't want to let discourage you and cause you to stop working. I just skipped past them and continue on until you find the next interesting one. There are nearly 100 two page exercises, most are good but they can't all be perfect.Still, more good stuff than bad, so definitely worth a couple bucks. The absolute best thing about the book is when you have finished working through it, you have a significant amount of material which is all usable content.
At its core, the book deals with a simple (emphasis on the simple) concept that is seems ridiculous, but it can mean a world of a difference. I am a big fan of James Altucher and Claudia Altucher, so I was interested in what they would have to say on creativity. I picked up this book during a time when I realized that I needed to become more "creative" (full-time freelancing). The book stripped down my "pie-in-the sky" thoughts about creativity and brought it down to real-world practice (sort of like Julia Cameron does with "Morning Pages"). The creative part of the book is that uses its own message to develop its content. The book demonstrates how to develop ideas with creative chapter ideas to jumpstart your creative ideas. It's a neat little book to read when you need more creativity in your life and need a simple practice to ground you.
One day Lucy Ricardo, having nothing better to do than practice her yoga, decided to write a book that would inspire the people of France to think more creatively. The only hitch was that her French wasn’t the best. She had problems keeping her prepositions straight, and other minor but recurrent issues, such as remembering that French sentences commonly end with periods, just like they do in English. Clarity of meaning, possibly due to a vocabulary inadequate for higher thought, often gave her pause. But, never mind, being up to date on pop culture kind of made up for that, didn’t it? Ricki thought Lucy’s limitations were adorable, and so perfection didn’t seem to matter all that much. Lucy soon discovered that writing a book came as quickly and easily as writing a fan letter, a note to Ethel, or making a grocery list (she definitely had a talent for list-making). Sometimes she thought of herself as a genius, and her best ideas deserved several repetitions. She’d spread those around the book, revamped, so nobody would notice they had read them already. After a week of sweat and hard work, her book was complete, and Lucy made plans to have it published. She was in such a rush of excitement to get her book out there, to help those poor, uncreative French men and women, that she didn’t want to waste time editing. Networking was a key element in her book, and she couldn’t wait to meet all her new celebrity fans: the fabulous Orson Welles, oh, my, Maurice Chevalier might call, Caesar Romero could drop by, Marlene Dietrich would … “Gee, Ricky, wouldn’t it be great if my book was translated into German?†This book is similar to Lucy’s book, except this one is in English. It’s sweet, sometimes bewildering, and thoroughly Lucy. It wins an extra point for charm.
