From Publishers Weekly

Psychotherapy is all things to all people in this mega-selling pop-psychology watershed, which features a new introduction by the author in this 25th anniversary edition. His agenda in this tome, which was first published in 1978 but didn't become a bestseller until 1983, is to reconcile the psychoanalytic tradition with the conflicting cultural currents roiling the 70s. In the spirit of Me-Decade individualism and libertinism, he celebrates self-actualization as life's highest purpose and flirts with the notions of open marriage and therapeutic sex between patient and analyst. But because he is attuned to the nascent conservative backlash against the therapeutic worldview, Peck also cites Gospel passages, recruits psychotherapy to the cause of traditional religion (he even convinces a patient to sign up for divinity school) and insists that problems must be overcome through suffering, discipline and hard work (with a therapist.) Often departing from the cerebral and rationalistic bent of Freudian discourse for a mystical, Jungian tone more compatible with New Age spirituality, Peck writes of psychotherapy as an exercise in "love" and "spiritual growth," asserts that "our unconscious is God" and affirms his belief in miracles, reincarnation and telepathy. Peck's synthesis of such clashing elements (he even throws in a little thermodynamics) is held together by a warm and lucid discussion of psychiatric principles and moving accounts of his own patients' struggles and breakthroughs. Harmonizing psychoanalysis and spirituality, Christ and Buddha, Calvinist work ethic and interminable talking cures, this book is a touchstone of our contemporary religio-therapeutic culture. First of all, When I read this book, I felt that this book may be the best book in psychology. This book is really thought provoking. It looks like there are multiple revisions/editions of this book over the period of time. I attached the picture of the soft cover one that I read. This book was recommended by one of my friends and then I also found some good ratings about this book. This book will give you a nice glimpse of your personality and will also make you realize that you can take control of your life. It is a good read for all age groups. The book starts with the tools/techniques of suffering, the discipline - to experience the pain of problems constructively. These four tools are: delayed gratification, acceptance of responsibility, dedication to truth, and balancing. The author says that the life problems cannot be avoided in life. To experience happiness, they need to be identified and solved. One of my favorite quote from the books is "Problems do not go away. They must be worked through or else they remain, forever a barrier to the growth and development of the spirit." It took me some time to read this book as it is thought provoking and the thoughts need to be processed and digested before proceeding further. If this review helped you and you plan to experience the "The Road Less Traveled" journey, then have fun on this beautiful journey of greater self-understanding and spiritual growth.

Excellent book! This book is in a league with Power vs. Force by Dr. David Hawkins and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. His lengthy discussion of Grace and the Unconscious is similar to Mr. Tolle's discussions about the soul and Dr. Hawkins "Map of Consciousness".If you're interested in spiritual growth, "The Road Less Traveled" may well help increase your level of consciousness..

This book saved my life. What more can you say? I thought it was going to be another "pull yourself up by your bootstraps and tuff it out," kind of self-help book that works for people who don't actually need help. But it isn't at all. Give it a chance.

This is one of my favorite books. I have read it and enjoyed every page more than twenty times in the last twenty years. I have audio tapes of the book read by Scott Peck and have listened to these tapes from beginning to end more than twenty times. I particularly enjoy the second section of this book called LOVE. Reading and comprehending the meaning of this chapter made me a better human being. I learned that love is the natural way for me to live every moment of every day. I have no time for negative thinking. I purchased this copy to give to my stepson. He has just become a father. I want him to benefit from the great wisdom Dr. Peck wrote with this marvelous book.

This book changed my life, in a good way. The first two chapters discuss discipline and indirectly define love, or more importantly the difference between conditional and unconditional love. I read this book a long time ago, it was so powerful that when I met someone struggling with relationships, I purchased this as a sort-of gift.

Many of us do not have healthy coping skills due to environment or lack of experience. This is the single most influential book in my life; found all the healthy skills needed to respond positively to challenging events.Twenty eight years later I still recommend this book to my friends, family and acquaintances. Bought an electronic copy for my reader because it should be a staple in any library. Try to reread every year as a new year resolution.Life is a journey, meant to be enjoyed no matter where you find yourself when you find the magic in this book.

Some of the psychology and cultural norms are outdated, but overall, timeless classic. Some of it was a little way out, but I loved the link between psychoanalysis, spirituality, and God.

I first read The Road Less Traveled some 35 years ago. I find rereading it certainly worthwhile after fathering 3 children and living an adult life. It hasn't been easy, and the first line certainly still applies, "Life is difficult." Scott's book provides many valuable insights, perhaps the most valuable is recognizing the purpose of life, to regain our divinity and become one with God. Frankly, that didn’t stick with me after the first read. Concepts like delayed gratification, discipline and serendipity, among others, did. Also laziness being the fruit of our original sin and affecting many facets of life. Becoming one with God took a while and some other books like The Way of Divine Love written thru Sr. Josefa Menendez and This Tremendous Lover by Fr. M. Eugene Boylan. The most influential book, even more than Scott’s, is True Life in God being written thru the Greek Orthodox mystic Vassula Ryden. Over 25 years ago, a friend introduced me to the work and after some reading and discernment; I concluded that God is the author. There is one part of the work that really addresses this becoming one with God. It’s called the Odes of the Holy Trinity. I call it God’s discourse on mystical marriage. There are other mystics who have tried to describe this process, mystics like St. John of the Cross and St. Theresa of Avila. I personally find reading them difficult, not so the Odes. For example, in the Ode of the Father, He writes:Scriptures say: "happy the pure in heart, they shall see God;" today, Vassula, everyone sees as far as they are able to see, but I am telling you all, you too could be counted among My saints who are fit to see Me if you allowed My Holy Spirit to pass through you to shatter all your impurities, and once purity is acquired, the vision of Myself will be given you;It seems simple enough, invite the Holy Spirit to pass through us and shatter our impurities. How do we do that? What are our impurities? Maybe that’s what Scott was talking about, this work and struggle of life. Ah, but the reward is out of this world, to be one with God, to become Love itself. Veni Sancte Spiritus!
