What was the culture of Israel like at a certain period and what was nature of the dominant culture in which it found itself? And, how did this conflict and the interactions resolve and move forward? Often framed within a dominant literary style or form of the era, for example Hittite suzerainty treaties or a Babylonian foundation myths, Wanderings offers great insight into known history and Biblical texts, new ways of looking at and understanding present themselves to the attentive reader. I first read Wanderings over 40 years ago. I keep "lending" it to friends and keep having to replace my copies .... I hope to continue lending and having to replace for a long time to come.

I bought this book years ago when it came out in paperback. After several moves and lending it to others, it had disappeared. I had been thinking about it as I read the scriptures and decided to see if I could find it online. Got it really cheap and I was surprised. Shipped from bookseller quickly in good condition.I will summarize this book as quickly as possible. Anyone familiar with the Old Testament can find a historical frame of reference in this tome. Chiam Potack was known as a great novelist but his skill at writing makes this history readable and noteworthy. It does not matter what you believe as the origins of the holy writ: it links documented historical facts with biblical events.

I love this book. I have been wanting this for many year and I am glad I purchased it. The only disappointment was the binding cracked when I first opened the book. It is still very readable.

You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this book. Potok is such a wonderful writer whose research is impressive. Once you finish the book, you'll want to re-read it, it's that good.

this author made me want to be his next door neighbor. what a great book this is and if you really want to know ancient history and ancient religions, this book has it all. if you are jewish, it's a must read.

Chaim Potok is one of my favorite authors. Perhaps I expected too much, but I was often disappointed in the style. I have read other reviews that rave about how Mr. Potok makes Biblical history come to life as he does the stories in his novels. I didn't see it.That being said, there were some amazing insights in this book that I have never before confronted. I am very glad I read the book.

Goes back to the beginning...literally. I read a little, put it down, read something else....then pick it up again. I haven't finished it yet, but I love the history. Plus, it is very well illustrated, or chock full of photographs which adds to the story. You know, a picture tells a thousand words. It is definitely a book to keep on the bookshelf.

I am using this volume for research purposes and it is excellent. Quality is like new and the pictures are amazing.
