Too many things kept me from giving this book a higher rating. I'm going to list a few so if you're not looking for spoilers, please stop reading.1. Acceptance of Rema as empress. Ok. So she's about to be executed and then thru some elaborate plan unbeknownst to anyone, the current emperor is killed and she's named the heir. What I have a huge problem with, is that EVERYONE just kind of went with it! No real explanation...just "oh you're the empress now? Cool beans!"2. Everything happened way to smoothly for me. There was conflict but no depth. I mean kidnapping children to force the army to cooperate? Who kidnapped hundreds of children? Soldiers I presume? And they didn't fight to keep that from happening? No one in Darmicks army resisted? Seriously, how can you kidnap HUNDREDS of children and no one knew about it?3. I think the deaths later in the book were written just so there would be some sense of saddens and loss towards the end. It was so unnecessary and it just felt like it was thrown in there because everything was going so smoothly the author needed a tear-jerker moment.I could go on but I've already forgotten the details of most of what I just read. Up to you if you wanna pick it up. It kept me occupied for about 2 hours

I really wanted to like this series and kept pushing on hoping for something unexpected or satisfying to happen, something special. It never surprised or delighted me. I should have listened when another reviewer had called these characters, "cardboard"--it couldn't be more infuriatingly true. There is no complexity to any character. The story is horribly unoriginal, ripping from Sleeping Beauty and every cliched YA story where the heroine goes through "training", finds a fun and devoted group of friends in a high school setting, has multiple love interests as one does in high school, goes on to fight some epic battle like Joan of Arc. Oh god and of course, the story ends (is this really even a spoiler?) with her having a baby with the perfect man--but don't worry, they waited to have sex until they were married. Puke. Everything turns out as expected. I feel badly to give such a negative review but this is pretty bad and I feel like I wasted hours reading and wasted my money.

http://bookbutterflyreviews.blogspot.ca/I have reviewed the first two books of this trilogy. The first book is The Key, which you can read HERE, and the second is Red, which you can read HERE. I will have a few spoilers in this review, but I will warn you before you can read them.So first and foremost, if you have gotten this far in the series that means you know the worst part of the first two books… THE CLIFFHANGERS! As soon as I finished Red, I had to start War right away. It was already 10pm, and I was tired, and I had to get up early, but I read it anyway because the cliffhanger just draws you back in. I am happy that the end of the third book didn’t have some twist and end in a cliffhanger… thank the Book Gods for this being the last in the series! I don’t think my sleep schedule could have taken it.Another love: Nathenek (AKA “Captain”). Every time there was an interaction between him and Rema, I was grinning like and idiot. They were by far my favorite parts of the book. I don’t know if I loved him because he was kind of a badass, or because he actually had a sense of honor, or what. What I DO know is that I wanted Rema to throw Darmik out the window and fall into Nathenek’s arms so they could live happily ever after. SPOILER: I was thoroughly disappointed when it didn’t happen (not that I thought it really would… there was too much foundation between Rema and Darmik to just throw it all out the window… But still!!) I kind of hope to see a spin off series that has Nathenek as the main character; I would love to see the world from his eyes.BIT OF A SPOILER HERE: Another think I enjoyed was seeing Darmik and Rema together again. As much as I love Nathenek, Darmik has earned my trust at this point and I wanted Rema to get the happily ever after she deserved. I like how accepting Darmik was of Rema’s new status. He didn’t want either of the crowns for himself, although he could have fought for them. I expected more of an inner conflict about all this new information that was thrown at him concerning Rema, but he didn’t even flinch. In the end, all of the tiny things that made Darmik Darmik made me accept him as Rema’s True Love once and for all… Sorry Nathenek! As a side note, I also loved the fact that Darmik was the Emperor’s illegitimate son. It explained so much; mainly why he was treated like crap going up by the man he THOUGHT was his father. It was a interesting and unexpected twist. Now for some of the things I didn’t love so much. The biggest issue I had with this conclusion to the trilogy was that it was very rushed. It definitely could have used at least 50-100 extra pages. Additionally, while changing perspectives from Darmik and Rema, I think the timeline gets a little muddled up… and if it doesn’t, then I was definitely just confused. I had to go back and reread to make sure I understood certain things correctly. Lastly, most of the story takes place in the sandy empire, rather than their home country. I wanted to see more of the civil war between the tyrant and the rebels! I wanted to see Darmik fight his brother and father more. I wanted Darmik to confront his father about how he treated him all this time. We see a bit of it at the end, but it was very rushed. In comparison, the pros outweigh the cons by far. The cons that do exist are mostly nit-picky things that are based on personal preference. The ending to this trilogy left me pleased and content with the story that spanned over three books. The only wish I have is that we got to see more of Nathenek from the start. I would have liked to see his development throughout the books. Maybe we will get to see a spin off series with him… CROSSING MY FINGERS! This was a great job by Jennifer Anne Davis. I suggest it to all those who love Romance, YA, Historical Fiction, Medieval Fantasy, and Swords.

Young Adult fantasy with a royal setting. This series was everything I love in a great story! And because I'm the kind of girl that best loves happily-ever-after stories, the ending was perfect for me. I instantly fell in love with Rema and Darmik from book one and even through the adversity and trials that separated them, I continued to root for them and their close friends: Neco, Ellie, Vesha, Audek and even Savenek. This story had me tearing up at several occasions, so it's not all happiness and rainbows. After all, the title is War.Along with the first two books, this story continues with being told by alternating POV's of Rema and Darmik, The end of this series is about battling those in power who are evil and finally releasing the kingdom from the oppression of the wicked. Lives are lost along the way. In the end though, the bravery and loyalty of those who pledge their lives to Rema are the heroes of the story.Seriously ya'll, if you haven't checked out this series yet, it's a MUST read! Go, grab it up now!If you love Young Adult fantasy and romance, similar genre series like The Remnant Chronicles and His Fair Assassin, then this is a MUST read for you!Favorite Quotes:These keys unlocked the secrets of her past, revealing a destiny she'd never imagined."If you hid, it would save me a lot of worry; although, the sort of person that would run and hide wouldn't be the one to have stolen my heart.""But you have to know, my heart belongs to Darmik. It always will."Language Rating: 1 (light)Mature Content Rating: 1 (light)Final Rating: 5 stars!
