Weddings have become a production, a business, a source of media entertainment, and a source of competition and one up-man-ship. Marriage, as a commitment and a sacrament pretty much fall by the wayside once the participants get wrapped up in the frenzy, fever, and slippery financial and emotional slope of planning "the event."I have to confess that I am a wedding junkie. I eat it all right up. I love weddings, I notice and nit-pick every detail and have mental spreadsheets of what I've liked and hated over the years. I've watched programs in which the bride's gown decision is treated as nothing short of a historical event. This is why it comes as such a surprise to me to be writing that weddings have gotten out of hand. People like me are part of the reason that this industry has ballooned to the point of wasteful extravagance and needless stress and created the fantasy that every bride is really royalty for that one day and will be forever emotionally marked if she cannot live her Princess Belle fantasy or whatever other nonsense TV and magazines have convinced her she needs for a successful wedding and, thus, life.But times change, the economy demands restraint (if not all-out thrift) and it's time to get down to basics: a committed bride and groom; their families; a ceremony marking this day as different and better from all others that came before; and the company of loving friends who take genuine joy in the happiness of the couple. Everything else is extra. That is the situation our family and the bride's family find ourselves in: neither can afford to go overboard both would like the day to be dignified and memorable, both will work together to do the best with what we have.I got this book in the hope of having an overview of what is really necessary for a small and economical family wedding. It covers everything from the legalities, the invitation options, the pre-wedding activities (if any), the wedding, the reception, the dress options, and the myriad details that you might or might not want to get involved in. It also provides the options that allow you go as overboard as you want. Really, it isn't geared at budget weddings at all, but it does assume that there are areas in which you might want to spend more or less than in others and offers alternatives, suggestions, and web sources.In that sense, it is helpful and practical. There are lists of popular food items at every price point; lists of music selections and delivery options; price/amount per person estimates on food, cake/desserts, bar, and rental items. It gives one clear and practical information with which you can begin to form an idea on basic logistics. There are intelligent discussions as to where DIY might or might not be the better option.Other than that, it is pretty much what you find in bridal magazines and other bridal books, maybe a little bit more down to earth. It provided a very clear picture of what is out there and how tempting it can be to spend a little more here, splurge a little bit there, and blow your whole budget one little line item at a time.The book is less expensive than most because it isn't in color, or glossy paper, or artistically photographed. While the lack-lustre visual experience might be a turn off for some, I found that it helps me keep distractions at a minimum and gives me the ability to concentrate on logistics without eye-candy distractions.

My wife and I used this book 16 years ago to plan our wedding. It was an enormous help in putting all of the details together for the wedding we really did have in mind. Since then we have sent our copy to friends and relatives getting married. We just ask the recipients to sign the book when they send it back to usWe bought this copy to help out one niece while another niece is using ours. Both are finding it as helpful to them as it was to us.

Helps a lot with the wedding planning and everything you need to do... But there is also a lot of unnecessary things written in this book. I just wish it was strictly an outline of what to do so in didn't have to spend so much extra time reading the entire thing.

Easy to read with all the essential information needed to plan your wedding. I like the no nonsense style and very direct advice. This book covers everything from dealing with tricky family dynamics to how much booze to order for the bar. Bridal looks and wedding invites....you name this book has it covered.

I'm from a small town in the midwest, and while the book was somewhat helpful in understanding broader ideas like wedding etiquette and wording on invites, it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped. It was almost too comprehensive and too overwhelming for someone like me, who just wanted to make sure I had all my bases covered.
