About the Author

David Palmer’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums across the US, and appear in numerous public and private collections. He is the recipient of a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, an Artist’s Grant from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, and a residency at 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. He has also created digital effects for over a dozen feature films, including The Polar Express, Spider-Man 3, and the first Harry Potter movie. He lives and works in Los Angeles. I absolutely love this book! The drawings are drop-dead gorgeous. There’s a nice mixture of complex scenes, individual horses (whole ones and close-ups),menagerie animals (my favorites are the cats and the frog), and decorative patterns. Some of these you could maybe color in a couple of hours, and others would take several days. Definitely not boring!The images are based on four famous merry-go-rounds in California, and there are captions along the inner margins telling where they are and who created them. The carousels included are: Santa Cruz Boardwalk (Charles Looff), Santa Monica Pier (Philadelphia Toboggan Company), Griffith Park, Los Angeles (Spillman Engineering) and Balboa Park, San Diego (Herschell-Spillman). There are 20 drawings in all, and they really capture the joyful feeling of these carousels and the lost era they represent.The 8 x 8-inch drawings are on single-sided pages, and there’s a very light dotted line along the left edge of each one that you could use as a guide if you wanted to cut them out and frame them (I’m keeping mine in the book). The paper is kind of medium weight, and there’s a blank page behind each drawing to prevent markers from bleeding through. A note on the intro page suggests sliding an additional piece of blank paper behind the page you’re coloring, and I think that’s probably a good idea.I took a bunch of photos before I started coloring, and have attached some of them below. I’m ordering another copy of this book just to enjoy thedrawings, and maybe a few more for gifts. What fun!

 This is a lovely little carousel inspired coloring book. While most of the line art designs in the book are of carousel animals, some are highlights of other parts of a carousel. I grew up near the Santa Monica Pier and was delighted to find that it was featured in this book.The designs are open and fairly easy to color with lots of room for blending. An unusual feature of the coloring book is that there is a blotter page behind each design page. I've found that while it is enough to stop most water-based markers from leaking through (two pages), it is not enough to stop alcohol-based markers. I suggest using extra pages or a heavy duty page such as card stock behind your working page. The extra page is still very nice to use for testing color schemes, etc.This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing my coloring medium on the paper:20 carousel inspired designs in a smaller format book (8.5 x 8 inches)Printed one side of the pagePaper is typical of CreateSpace: white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated.Designs do not merge into the binding and there is plenty of room to cut out pages if you choose to do so. A cutting line is provided as a guideGlue BindingAlcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.Water-based markers bleed through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I found that I could layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and I could blend easily using a blending stick. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I also found that hard lead pencils leave dents through the paper.

I am very disappointed as I am a HUGE Loof Carousel lover, having ridden on them as a child and as a teenager--including the original carousel from Coney Island, which later got moved to Salisbury Beach,MA, and which later followed me to San Diego! As the title of this book is Carousel, I expected that the artist renderings would be of horses and other creatures that looked as though they were actually on a carousel--some are, but many are not (no pole going through the horses and other creatures). I also expected one or more carousel cars, but instead the renderings are merely designs that one would find on a carousel.Also, the coloring book is not the standard size--the pages are smaller. Adding to my disappointment is that there are only 20 coloring pages-- 8 of those 20 being merely designs. The paper is of good quality.

This book is a must for anyone who loves classic merry-go-rounds. The drawings are sensitive and true, and Palmer's drawings really stress the characteristics of the great designers. I'd buy the book if it weren't a coloring book just for the introduction to historic carvers/designers. I do wish the book had a little more written history, but that's not what the author was trying to do.

I like this book because the picture's are easy and clear for coloring. Also it has a variety of items to color relating to carousels. I use a big, hardback book on carousels for coloring reference that I purchased previously.The book is smaller sized, but the picture's fit the pages and the smaller size makes it less bulky and easier.It does have extra blank pages, still enough pages for coloring.

A lovely book, even if you're not particularly into the adult coloring craze. The illustrations are rich and wonderfully detailed, and true to the original artworks they are based upon. A great way to study the different styles and details that the original artists incorporated into their work. Splendid!

Fun to color in, which is the point of this sort of purchase. The illustrations are also more accurate depictions of carousel animals than usually found in coloring books.
