If Hunter S. Thompson wrote a hunting book, it would be like this. It's like he set out to write a book about turkey hunting but is constantly side tracked by some wacky thought. Turkey hunters are a kind of crazy crowd to begin with so it's not entirely out of pocket, but you'll definitely feel your head spin at times wondering where the heck he's going. I'm really not sure I gained any more insight on bird behavior or tips to hunting turkeys, but it's an entertaining read if you like the ramblings of old nutty hunters.

I've been a turkey hunter for the last 18 of my 55 years. Like Tom I am blessed to live in Alabama where the eastern wild turkey is abundant and the opportunities to hunt him almost unlimited. As with all turkey hunters I know, my spirits always rise at the approach of the spring season in March and remain high until the close of the turkey season on April 30th. I of course spend most of the month of May in withdrawals remedied only by setting a countdown on my calendar marking the days until the opening of the season next year. I'm a turkey hunter. Recently while admiring my collection of hunting and outdoor books a friend and colleague who is without a doubt the best turkey hunter that I have ever personally known ask, " where's the Tenth Legion?" I had no idea what he was talking about and told him so. Amazed, he said, "you know..The Tenth Legion....Tom Kelly....you're kidding me...right? When I told him that I really had never read anything about a tenth Legion that didn't involve Rome or a Roman army he insisted that I read what he then described as "the best...mind you, not among the best, simply, 'The Best' book on the subject of turkey hunting ever written".Now I have. He was wrong only in that Tenth Legion may be "The Best" hunting book of any kind that I have ever read. And then, maybe it's not even a "hunting book" at all. Maybe it's a book about life posing as a hunting book just to get us started turning pages.Thank you Col. Tom for this wonderful work. It's certainly no wonder that it continues to be so popular even after more than 40 years in print. My great hope is that I can personally meet you one day and have a minute....or a week to discuss the last chapter.You will forever have a friend and kindred spirit in Prattville!B. After spending the last two years hunting high pressure territory in Alabama, I can relate. The humor is splendid and sharp. It's almost like going to turkey hunter therapy to know others have the same addiction as you. Mr. Kelly makes you feel accepted into a secret honor society while sharing the exploits only a turkey hunter understands. A must read for the afflicted.

Extremely easy read, this is the real deal. If you're a turkey hunter, this book will have you reading it again and again. Then you'll recommend it to your fellow turkey hunters. Portions had me laughing out loud and most others had me relating 100%.The Colonel captures the essence of turkey hunting. I highlighted numerous sentences, passages, pages for revisit.Highly recommended!

I love this book! Not many books have the depth that this book has. It is a book that will gender thought.

Even though I hunt turkeys in Michigan, not Alabama, every chapter resonates with my brief experience, and excites me in anticipation for the next season.

Fantastic book. Reminded me alot of the writing styles of early 1900's outdoorsmen like Kephart and Jaeger. Well worth the read especially if you are a turkey hunter

What a great read, especially for the die-hard turkey hunter. A beautiful picture is painted that accurately depicts the splendor and emotional rollercoaster of pursuing the wild turkey. It was written 40+ years ago, but reads as though it was published recently. The only downside is that I'm now ready to roll for turkey, but the season is still 10 weeks away. Highly recommended!

I am chronically acquainted with this book and bought it for a friend in north Florida. He very much liked the Tenth Lesion; I have not talked with him about The Boat and may need to read it while I am down visiting him in March. Col Kelly has an excellent gift of a great sense of humor and at the same time, he has gift of making his humor like one is laughing with him and not at him, as well as vice versa.
