This book of uncaptioned photographs is a waste of money. Some of the photos are interesting in a voyeuristic way but without captions or more information about the photos, it seems somewhat like snapshots with a paparazzi quality (as one reviewer commented).I did not feel that the photographer had a deep respect for her subjects nor a great deal of knowledge of the Geisha world which she was allowed to photograph.Some of the shots are simply ridiculous, like the one of the guy getting "pantsed" at a party. I mean - what does that have to do with Geisha? Yeah, ok, so they go to parties to entertain and end up playing silly drinking games. What does that tell me about Geisha?If I was Geisha, I would have been embarrassed by this book.

I commend the author for publishing these pictures notwithstanding the criticism she received from another reviewer for doing so. Those interested in looking into this world were hungry for this information. I do agree with the previous reviewer, however, that the book should have contained explanatory captions and information in the context of the photographs. I wanted to know the story behind the photograph, and this was lacking.

Wonderful photos and there is one photo I think is exquisite. I wish there were more...more of the hair, combs, patterns, etc.

The contents does not match the attractive title. I expected from the title to find more than what in the content.Still there is some thing to know. I liked the song words of the geisha they are lovely.

If you are a person who loves Japanese culture, or if you're a person with any kind of association with Geisha, this book is a must have! It's completely changes the way you think about a lot of things. It's an amazing book beyond well worth having!

While I was looking forward to Ms Cobb's work, I was sadly disappointed by it. Not only is it NOT a book on the lives of Geisha, it is a Westernized assault on the beauty, mystery and art of a cultural traditional icon that has graced Japan for centuries. Ms Cobb has clearly crossed the line. She was invited into a private world where she could have documented the actual training, dedication and beauty of the lives of these women who give themselves completely to the traditional life of Geisha. Instead Cobb chose to portray these women in unflattering positions and sexualized photos that have little or nothing to do with the art or culture of Geisha. Shame on her. I view Ms Cobb's attempt to drag down a traditional culture much older, nicer and more beautiful than her own as a sad choice made by a Westerner who not only does not understand Japan but who views life in general in a bad light.There are many beautiful, poignant photography books (and novels) on Geisha that I could recommend. This is not one of them.

Jodi Cobb's photographs of the Geishas were gorgeous. She showed the reader rare moments not seen to the public eye like a maiko sleeping or two young geishas reading a magazine together. The reader also gets to see geishas in the middle of getting dressed and putting on makeup. It's these intimate moments that makes this book stand out. The reader gets to see glimpses of young and old geishas that other geisha books don't show.My biggest beef with this book is that it looks like it was thrown together at the last second. My least favorite were the single quotes that starts from the middle of the page and until the end. "What was the point of those quotes?" I wondered. I really did enjoy the introduction and the backgrounds of two geisha mothers. I wished that through out the book there was more information about geishas. The lack of gave me the impression that Jodi didn't put in enough research but that's just my impression. In the end I did enjoy the book but there were many opportunities for Jodi to have made this book even better.

I read it one sitting, thirsting for more. Highly recommended.
