It’s hard to rate a book like this. The amount of horrors this women goes through is unbelievable. It is unimaginable how she truly survived all that she has been through. That being said, I feel like this book isn’t that well written. I feel like the story would have been much more powerful if it was told in more complete stories and in more detail. Often times, especially at the end of the book where I felt like She skipped so much about the journey into South Korea. I felt like the end came abruptly and didn’t allow for closure of the book. Three stars for the writing but a five star story.

thanks to Lucia Jang for having the courage to relive her story for good and bad. couldn't have been easy to do.if you look at her on youtube, she is a humble woman but with amazing strength and resolve.

If you've ever felt depressed or hopeless you should read this book and feel better because your "problems" will seem like blessings in comparison with what Jang endured. It is amazing, gut wrenching, emotionally grueling yet inspirational memoir. My prayers for the people of North Korea, especially the women and children. God bless Jang for sharing her own arduous journey.

I served five years in South Korea in various tours from 1980 thru 1997 while in the army. So, I've been acquainted with the sad history of the Koreas since the Korean War, the separation of families, the disparity between the developed south and the hardscrabble north. I've read numerous accounts of North Koreans who've escaped the totalitarianism and barbarity of the north in search of freedom, most times at the expense of leaving their family and loved ones behind, never to see them again. This one is very touching and 'oh so real' to me. My heart goes out to the author. This book is particularly relevant now, as the U.S. is going into a summit with North Korea. May we never forget how the common North Korean people are treated by their government.

Wow. What an incredible story. Ms. Jang, my hat is off to you. Just proves that a political system that relies on stupid lies and brutality is no match for a determined and intelligent person. Great book.

Written with great detail and personal insights, this story inspired me with the courage of Lucia Jang as a young girl, and later a grown woman standing against the cruelty she suffered both in China and in her own country of North Korea. Just because she wanted to avoid starving and protect her family, Lucia suffered great injustice. She shows the triumph of the human spirit. I wanted to go to North Korea and start feeding everyone and telling them that the people in the West love them!

Before that book,i had never had the slighest idea about this country.After i read it,i was shocked with horror about the abuse of the everyday people under a totalitarian regime.The ordeal of this woman is something beyond measure.It is a very good book,for those who want to know something more about the world.

I found the book very interesting and current. Reading about the hardships of the North Korean people was heartbreaking. I couldn’t put the book down. So many terrible things happened and every time she tried to escape to a better life she was thwarted by some other person in a similar situation. These things are still happening in North Korea today! A real eye opener.
